Announcing a New OSAM Research Partner

By Patrick O’Shaughnessy
July 2018

We are excited to announce our second OSAM Research Partner and our search for more partners with some very specific skills.

Partner #2

Kevin Zatloukal is an ex-Google, ex-Microsoft programmer with a Ph.D. in computer science from MIT. He teaches computer science at the University of Washington. Kevin is exactly the kind of person we are looking for: he has deep interest in investing but also lists skills such as SQL, Python, machine learning, and statistics as "familiar friends." Together with Kevin we’ve already explored value traps, canonical correlation among investment factors, and the application of ML methods like random forests to unique investing problems. When my first conversation with Kevin quickly veered into a model he had built to predict NFL performance among college football players (wide receivers, specifically), I knew we were onto something.

As an example of what these collaborations can produce, check out our "Factors From Scratch" research project on value + momentum investing, researched and written with our first Research Partner, Jesse Livermore+

Search for More

We have several other partners in the pipeline, but want to hear from more candidates. There are two more skillsets we'd value highly in our next few research partners: machine learning and/or data visualization. Because our data and technology platform keeps getting stronger, we believe this partnership represents the best opportunity for curious investors with a technical background to explore and build. If you or someone you know may be interested in joining us, please read this summary of the program (which includes how to apply).
